Darrell Schumacher

Darrell Schumacher has coached football for over 44 years and is one of Iowa’s most respected coaches. Throughout his career, Darrell served as head coach at Oskaloosa, Vinton, Spencer, and Garner‑Hayfield‑Ventura High Schools. He also was an assistant coach at Iowa Central Community College for 7 years following his retirement from teaching. 

He is one of only two coaches in Iowa history to lead four different high schools to the state playoffs and guided Garner‑Hayfield to a state championship in 1991. In recognition of his outstanding contributions to the sport, Darrell was inducted into the Iowa Football Coaches Association (IFCA) Hall of Fame in 2000. 

Darrell has also served as President of the Iowa Football Coaches Association and has received numerous prestigious honors, including the Walt Fiegel Award from the IFCA and the Iowa High School Athletic Association (IHSAA) State Character Counts Coach of the Year Award in 2011.

Now retired, Darrell resides in Garner with his wife, Deb, and remains active in the community as a member of the Garner City Council.
